Historic Map - Altoona, PA - 1895
Description
This reproduction view of Altoona, Pennsylvania featuring the forefront image of the Pennsylvania Railroad car shops was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1895. The Pennsylvania Railroad was founded in 1846 and became a major railroad system connecting Chicago and St. Louis to New York and New Jersey. Its Altoona complex employed thousands of workers and was the major industry in 1895. The Railroad created the Altoona’s fire departments and library, and had the town’s hospital moved to a location near the shop gates.
