Historic Map - Bronx, NY - 1897
Description
Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Bronx, New York, drawn by William W. Klein and published by New York Department of Street Improvements in 1897. This map of Bronx was published one year before the community was named to be included as one of New York City's five boroughs. Bronx lies on the banks of the Bronx River. The river and town were named after early settler Jonas Bronck from Sweden. The area was mainly a farming and cattle community supplying nearby New York, transporting goods by bridge across the Harlem River. The farmers were required to pay a toll when transporting their goods across the bridges. To settle a dispute over the tolls, farmers built their own toll-free bridge which ended all toll fees. Edgar Allan Poe spent the last three years of his life in his Bronx cottage enjoying the shores of Long Island and the rolling hills of the area.
The map was originally published on two pages and has been pieced together for printing with some editing evident. This map from 1897 includes clearly labeled street names and neighborhoods of:
Mott Haven
Melrose
West Morrisania
Mount Hope
Tremont
Fordham
Bedford Park
