Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Cazenovia, New York, published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1890. The village of Cazenovia was named after Theophilus Cazenove, who was an agent for the Holland Land Company and had worked to obtain large portions of land for development. Cazenove arrived in 1790 and worked from Philadelphia to successfully obtain interests in canal and manufacturing companies for his firm. He then turned his attention to investing the firm into wild lands. He employed Alexander Hamilton and then Aaron Burr to help in attaining some lands from Indian claims. In all, the company acquired over five million acres of land in New York and Pennsylvania. Many of these purchases turned out to be non-profitable, but Cazenovia remained a strong dairy farming community with large expanses of rich grazing lands nearby.
