View of Chicago, Cook County, I.L., 1893 / drawn & published by Peter Roy.

This print of Chicago, Illinois was drawn and published by Peter Roy in 1892. The great World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 was a major boost to Chicago’s international popularity. The highly anticipated celebration of the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the “new world” featured the inventive features of the 1890's including Nikola Tesla’s newly patented high-frequency lighting system.

Buildings of grand neoclassical style stood within formal grounds and canals. George Ferris built his famous 264 foot wheel along the “Midway Plaisance”. Over twenty five million visitors attended the event from May 1, 1893 until October 30, 1893.

On this map, “compliments of S. E. Barrett Mfg. Co., 68-74 La Salle Street, Chicago, Illinois”, proposed plantings for the fair are indicated along with water and rail transportation routes.
