Moyer in 1898. Clarksburg was established near the West Fork River and Elk Creek in 1785 and named for Revolutionary War general George Rogers Clark. Famed Confederate general Stonewall Jackson was born in Clarksburg in 1824. The B. & O. Railroad was extended from Grafton to Clarksburg in 1856. During the American Civil War, Clarksburg was a key supply depot for the Union army. Following the war Clarksburg grew as an industrial and manufacturing center fueled by the region’s valuable coal industry.
