This bird’s-eye view print of Great Bend, Kansas was drawn and published by J. J. Stoner, Beck & Pauli Lith. in 1882. Great Bend was settled in the 1870's at a great bend of the Arkansas River, at which the river flows from northeast to southeast.
The town grew following the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, and it became a valued shipping point for Texas cattle.
The cattle industry lasted until the late 1870's and Great Bend progressed into an important business center and county seat of Barton County.
