Description

View of North Attleborough, Bristol County, M.A., 1878 / drawn & published by O. H. Bailey & J. C. Hazen.

This bird’s-eye view print of North Attleborough, Massachusetts was drawn and published by O. H. Bailey & J. C. Hazen, C. H. Vogt, Lith. in 1878. North Attleborough was settled in the 1660's along the Ten Mile River. By the mid-1800's, the tiny agricultural community had evolved into an important manufacturing center. Foundries had been set up, as early as 1780, for the molding of brass as the Industrial Revolution proceeded.

North Attleborough began to be known for its manufacture of buttons. Cotton mills emerged along the river following the War of 1812, prompting more development. North Attleborough prospered during the American Civil War, as factories busily produced military badges and medals along with uniform buttons.

Following the war North Attleborough manufacturers turned toward fashionable jewelry, chains and studs. Most town manufacturers maintained sales outlets along New York City’s prominent Broadway.
