View of North East, Erie County, P.A., 1896 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer. This aero-view map of North East, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1896. The agricultural borough of North East sits just a mile and a half from Lake Erie. It was incorporated in 1834 and is well known for its fine grapes and cherries. North East was the hometown of the little girl that wrote to Abraham Lincoln, suggesting he grow a beard and if he did, her father and brother might vote for him. When Lincoln stopped in North East in 1861, he spoke of the matter and thanked her. In 1881, the Bishop of Erie, the Rev. Tobias Mullen established the Catholic College just outside of town. The seminary maintained a six year instruction for young men entering the priesthood.
The map from 1896 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route. It shows Lake Erie in the background.
