View of Oneida, N.Y. : 1874 / drawn & pub. by O.H. Bailey ; C.H. Vogt, lith., Milwaukee, Wis. Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Oneida, New York, drawn by Oakley Hoopes Bailey in 1874. Oneida is a city in Madison County named after the American Indians that formerly lived in the region. In the 1830's, the state built a feeder canal for its new canal system through Oneida, making it possible to transport goods more efficiently. In 1839 the New York Central Railroad made a deal with a local landowner that gave them the right-of-way over his land in exchange for assuring that every train would stop in the town. The community then established several manufacturing firms. In the mid-1800's, many Oneida's residents participated in a utopian socialist commune called the Oneida Community. The commune produced their own silk and canned goods, then began producing flatware. Later the Oneida Community would be known as Oneida Limited and become nationally recognized as an important supplier of flatware.
