This seat of government for Philadelphia County acted as the national capital during Revolutionary times. Philadelphia prospered with its river port location becoming a major trade and industrial center.

In 1876, Philadelphia welcomed the nation’s first world’s fair, the Centennial Exposition, to town. Located at Fairmount Park, the fair drew in over 10 million visitors to the Philadelphia area during its six month run.

The fair celebrated the nation’s past, present and future, and featured such displays as the John Bull Locomotive, the Corliss Steam Engine, Singer’s sewing machine, Remington’s typewriter and Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone. The centennial gave way to much progress and building in Philadelphia.
