View of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, P.A., 1871 / drawn & published by Otto Krebs. This panoramic print of Pittsburgh, Allegheny and Birmingham, Pennsylvania was drawn, lithographed and published by Otto Krebs in 1871. Pittsburgh is located at the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers. The early farms of the region were quite prolific, but with transportation of produce difficult the farmers began concentrating on grain, particularly for the local use of distillation for spirits. Following the Whiskey Insurrection, which caused much consternation in town, when transportation of goods improved, Pittsburgh became a business giant, gaining many new manufacturers and companies.
Benjamin Bakewell established Bakewell & Co. in 1808, producing cut, engraved and flint glass. The firm, in 1825, began producing pressed glass, making mass production of glass possible. Pittsburgh was a huge producer of cotton goods in the 1800's. The manufacture of pig iron and coke began in the 1800's and by 1833 a row of coke ovens at the base of Coal Hill were put into use. By mid-century Pittsburgh was one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of iron and steel. Through many labor disputes and cholera epidemics Pittsburgh forged on and several of its industrialists joined the philanthropic tradition of funneling their wealth into community institutions and humanitarian endeavors. The American Civil War was a big boost for Pittsburgh’s economy.
The detailed illustration from 1871 includes streets, buildings and bridges.
