View of Pittsfield, Berkshire County, M.A., 1899 / drawn & published by J. E. Rapp. This bird’s-eye view print of Pittsfield, Massachusetts was drawn and published by J. E. Rapp in 1899. Pittsfield was finally settled in the 1750's near the tributary waters of the Housatonic River. The farming community was known as Pontoosuck Plantation until its incorporation in 1761 as Pittsfield, after politician William Pitt.
In the early 1800's, Merino sheep were introduced to the area, leading to Pittsfield’s woolen manufacturing era. Mills were established throughout the region for the manufacture of fine woolen goods.
Pittsfield was served by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and shops of the Boston and Albany Railroad were located in town.
In the 1890's, William Stanley, Jr. moved his electric works from Great Barrington to Pittsfield. The company would later become General Electric.
