Description

Properties of the Delaware River Improvement Company on Morrisville Island, Pa. opposite Trenton, N.J. Lithographed by O.H. Bailey & Co.

Reproduction panoramic view of Trenton, New Jersey with Morrisville, Pennsylvania in the foreground drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by O. H. Bailey & Co. in 1900. The image shows the properties belonging to the Delaware River Improvement Company at the time.

Trenton is located on the Delaware River with Morristown, Pennsylvania lying just across the river to the west. It was the location of George Washington's first victory in the Battle of Trenton. On December 26, 1776, Washington with his troops crossed the frigid waters of the Delaware and defeated the Hessian troops that held Trenton. Six days prior to the battle, Colonel Johann Gottlieb Rall, commander of the Hessians, surveyed, what was thought to be a weakness in his defenses located where Brunswick, Princeton and Pennington Avenues now intersect with Broad and Warren Streets. Colonel Rall intended to fortify the site, but the project was never completed. He was wakened that night to the rattle of musketry and tried to rally his troops, but it was too late. The two divisions of the Continental army had hemmed in the village and began firing artillery directly at the area that had been neglected by the Hessian leader. In the course of minutes the battle was over with Washington victorious. Trenton was briefly the nation's capital after the Revolutionary War.

The map from 1900 includes buildings, railroad lines and unlabeled streets.
