Description

Bird’s-eye View of Wilton, Maine, 1895.

Maine's first cotton mill was built by Solomon Adams in the town of Wilton in 1810.  George Henry Bass established G. H. Bass & Co., makers of Bass shoes, in 1876.  The G. H. Bass Co. factory is referenced on the map.  Bass shoes were worn by Charles Lindburgh on his flight across the Atlantic and by Admiral Byrd in his Antarctic expeditions.  The company continued to manufacture in Wilton until 1998.

The Wilton Academy is also referenced on the map.  The Wilton Academy, granting free high school to all residents, was established in 1895, the same year that this map was created.
