Description
Map of the Erie Railway with its connections, engraved, printed and manufactured by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. The Erie Railway was built in the 1830’s and was known at the time as the New York & Erie Railroad. The new line consisted of a 6’ broad gauge track that operated within New York State from Lake Erie at Dunkirk to the Hudson Riverat Piermont. Trains began running portions of the line in 1841, but soon after, construction costs forced the railroad into bankruptcy. Eventually the railroad from Dunkirk to Piermont was completed and opened in 1851 to much fanfare. Dignitaries such as President Fillmore and Secretary of State Daniel Webster were on hand for the inspection tour and speeches. The railroad reorganized in 1861 as the Erie Railway. In 1878 it became known as the New York, Lake Erie & Western Railroad and later in 1895 as the Erie.
This map contains portions of the northeastern and north-central states. Shown are cities, towns and counties. At the bottom right is an inset map which focuses on New York City and New Jersey, and a leading city mileage chart.
