Map of the Railroads of the State of New York prepared under the direction of the railroad commissioners. Additions to railroad transportation in New York State during the mid-1800's, led to expanded settlement of remote areas of western New York. A number of lines were added during the mid-1800's to reach the western regions of the state with connections into Pennsylvania and Canada.
Several railroad lines were built, during this time period, to transport anthracite coal from mines in Pennsylvania and New York to the industrial areas within the state and elsewhere.
This map of New York and parts of adjacent states was published in 1856 by David Vaughan. It displays the state's relief, drainage, county boundaries, cities and towns. Color coded railroads are indicated as either operational, under construction, or proposed.
