Description
Railway and County Map of the Southern States; embracing the States of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Tennessee exhibiting all the towns, villages, stations, and landings; the rivers, railways, common roads, canals throughout these states. Mobile was heavily fortified during the civil war. Union navy forces held a blockade to prevent ships from entering the harbor but Confederates devised a fleet of fast operating camouflaged boats that managed to supply the town.
The 40 foot submarine, H.L. Hunley, was built in Mobile before being shipped to the waterways of Charleston, South Carolina where it sank numerous times during practice runs in 1863, before finally sinking its first enemy boat, the USS Housatonic.
The Siege of Vicksburg and subsequent surrender of Vicksburg by Confederate General John C. Pemberton occured on July 4th, 1863. This event, combined with General Robert E. Lee's defeat at Gettysburg the preceding day, is widely thought to mark the turning point in the American Civil War.
The Battle of Mobile Bay was fought in August of 1864. During that conflict Union Admiral David Farragut was heard to recite “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead”, as the USS Tecumseh engaged a Confederate mine, sinking the ship immediately
This hand-colored map of the southern United States was engraved by Joseph Beuther and published in 1864 by Edward Mendenhall. It shows drainage, cities, towns, counties, canals, roads, and the railroad system of 1864.
