Phelps's National Map of the United States, a travellers guide, embracing the principle railroads, canals, steamboat and stage routes, throughout the Union. In 1850 California was added to the Union, and Texas borders were redefined to their present boundaries. Texas relinquished its claim to the New Mexico Territory, and later that year the Utah Territory was designated.
Much building of railroads was occurring throughout the United States during the 1850's.
These maps were published in 1852 by Ensign & Thayer. The larger map shows major destinations and railroad network of the states east of the Missouri River. Smaller maps include the lower Florida peninsula, north Maine, and the western territories including the newest states of Texas and California.
The border consists of state emblems surrounded by illustrations of historic figures including Zachary Taylor, Marquis de Lafayette, George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Millard Fillmore, James Madison, James Monroe, Benjamin Franklin, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, Roger Williams, John Tyler and James K. Polk.
