Post Route Map of the States of Virginia and West Virginia. Founded in 1607, the Colony of Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the New World.
In 1836 the first railroad reached Harpers Ferry.
In 1849 the Wheeling Bridge was completed. The bridge was brought down by heavy winds in 1854.
In 1852, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad completed a line from Baltimore to Wheeling to become the longest railroad in the world at that time. A new steel truss bridge carrying the B & O line across the Shenandoah River was built in 1894.
This detailed map of Virginia and West Virginia shows post offices with the intermediate distances on mail routes in operation in 1896. The image was published in that year by A. von Haake. Portrayed are cities, towns, counties, railroads, and waterways. An explanation of mail delivery service is provided.
