Historic Railroad Map of the Southeastern United States - 1893

Bird's-eye view of the Richmond & Danville Railroad and the Florida Central & Peninsular Systems and their Connections.

This perspective representation of the southeastern states was drawn and engraved in 1893 by the American Bank Note Company for the Richmond & Danville Railroad. The map, looking north from Florida, shows drainage, cities and towns. Railroad line are labeled with the main lines in red.

The Richmond and Danville Railroad was completed in the 1850's. During the American Civil War, the line was used vigorously by the Confederacy.

At the time of this map’s publishing, the railroad’s future was quite uncertain. The controlling interest company had declared bankruptcy, and the railroad and its assets were eventually sold to the Southern Railway Company.
