Description

View of Carnegie, Allegheny County, P.A., 1897 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This reproduction panoramic view of Carnegie, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897. Carnegie was established along Chartiers Creek in 1894, incorporating the boroughs of Chartiers and Mansfield. The quiet farming and whiskey producing community prospered during the 1800's as coal was discovered and mined throughout the region.

In the 1870's, Scottish-American industrialist Andrew Carnegie founded the Carnegie Steel Company in nearby Braddock. The steel firm grew to be the most profitable enterprise in the world by the 1890's. The new borough of Carnegie was named after him. He, in turn, with his philanthropic interests, had a high school and a free library with music hall built within the town’s borders in 1899. Carnegie now lies within the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.

The map from 1897 includes Carnegie’s streets, buildings, bridges and railroad lines.
