The city of Cheney, Washington was incorporated in 1883, one year before the publication of this map. The city experienced a rocky beginning with many border and name changes throughout the 1860's and '70's, until the Northern Pacific Railroad built a depot in the city - it was then named after a director of the railroad, Benjamin P.
