This bird’s-eye view print of Decorah, Iowa was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Merchant’s Lithographing Co. in 1870. Decorah was founded by Europeans in the mid-1800's in the valley surrounded by high tablelands of the Upper Iowa River. The town’s first school was built in 1854.
In the next year, the Land Office for the Turkey River Land District established an office in Decorah which lured many speculators to the community. Ammon, Scott & Co. began manufacturing agricultural implements in Decorah in 1853.
The Lutheran church began a liberal arts institution on an elevated site just west of town in 1861. The Norwegian Lutheran College’s main building, of Norman gothic style, stood on the school’s thirty-two acres of rolling grounds. The Trout Run Woolen Mill was erected in 1866 and Decorah Woolen Mill Company’s four-story factory was built in 1867. Decorah was incorporated in 1871.
