Description

View of Denver, Denver County, C.O., 1887 / drawn & published by Rocky Mountain News.

This bird’s-eye view print of Denver, Colorado was drawn and published by Rocky Mountain News, Denver in 1881. Denver was established at the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River during the gold rush era of the late 1850's.

When the Colorado Territory was formed in 1861, Denver was named the county seat of Arapahoe County. Later, when Colorado earned its statehood, Denver was named capital. The town, located in the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains was a haven for gold and silver seekers of the era.

Trains from all parts converged at Denver and branched out to the region’s mining interests. Denver was a recognized supply town for the mines as well as a processing and transportation center for the various ore.

A horse-drawn railway line was installed through town in 1872. Denver’s telephone exchange service began in 1879. The Tabor Block Opera House building was completed in 1881. The five-story ornate structure was built by Mr. Tabor, who had made his fortune at nearby Leadville.

With the nearby valuable mines, Denver was attracting unsavory characters and con artists ready to swindle any stranger in town who carried money to spare. Saloons and gambling halls were common sights in Denver during the 1880's.

The illustration includes streets, buildings, railroad routes and vicinity.
