Description

View of Duluth, Saint Louis County, M.N., 1887 / drawn & published by H. Wellge.

This perspective view of Duluth, Minnesota was drawn by Henry Wellge and published by Beck & Pauli lithographers in 1887. Duluth has been an important Lake Superior trading port ever since the area was part of New France. In 1855, when Saint Louis County was designated, Duluth became its seat of government.

Copper was mined in the area and then iron ore. An extension of the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad from St. Paul was added in the late 1860's. This railroad line enabled Duluth to transport the region’s iron ore and harvested timber more easily and the town began to boom. Immigrants from all over Europe settled in and wealthy Americans began to build impressive summer mansions throughout the area.

The map, copyrighted by Duluth News Company, indicates an 1880 population of 3,400 and an 1887 population of 35,000. It includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes. Port activity in the Bay of Duluth is displayed in the foreground including the steamer “City of Duluth”.
