This bird’s-eye view print of Loda, Illinois was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Chicago Lith. Co. in 1869. The township of Loda was established in the 1850's as a stop along the Illinois Central Railway.
Loda was laid out by the Associated Land Company, which was closely associated with the railroad. The firm sold 16,000 acres to Mr. Adam Smith in 1855 and he quickly built farm buildings, a large mill and a productive hay press. He then began developing farmlands. Smith erected stores at the center of town and established the first hotel.
A distillery was begun in Loda in the late 1850's. The large facility became the backbone of the community until its closure in the mid-1870's.
The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route.
