Historic Map - New York & Brooklyn, NY - 1875
Description
This reproduction bird's-eye view map of New York and Brooklyn, New York was drawn on stone by Parsons & Atwater and published by Currier & Ives in 1875. It provides a colorful look at New York and vicinity just ten years after the American Civil War ended. At the bottom is Hoboken and Jersey City, and at the center, Manhattan. Brooklyn is in the distance, pictured with the new projected bridge. The bridge was completed eight years after this map's publishing.
The map captures the city of New York two years after trading was halted on the stock market on September 20, 1873 for ten days following the failure of Jay Cooke & Co., the first suspension of its kind. Nearly 300 brokerage houses collapsed as a result. The following year saw riots and protests by unemployed workers in the city. Over 7,000 gathered in Tompkins Square on January, 13, 1874. Mounted police injured dozens as they tried to control the crowds.
P. T. Barnum opened his Roman Hippodrome in 1874, in the former New York, New Haven and Harlem Railroad depot building. This site was to eventually become Madison Square Garden.
This amazingly detailed panoramic map from 1875 shows buildings, ports, railways and shipping traffic.
