This topographic view of Reading, Pennsylvania was compiled from sketches by J. Hanold Kendall and published in 1881. Reading was founded along the Schuylkill River in the mid-1700's and became the seat of government of Berks County when the county was established in 1852. Reading’s population in 1881 is noted on the map as 45,000. Situated in the midst of a rich mineral and agricultural district, Reading had become a large manufacturing center. The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, which was started here in 1833, was of much controversy in 1877, as it was part of a statewide railroad strike over wages. The railroad bridge was torched by strikers and six citizens were killed.

The map from 1892 includes streets, buildings, steeples, factories, orchards, canal, bridges and railroad route. The railroad bridge is noted to have been burnt by riot in 1877 and rebuilt by the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad in 1878. It features inset illustrations of the following:

Pennsylvania is highly favored with charming mountain resorts; among these favored spots there are no attractions superior to those which make up the surroundings of our fair city. A more beautiful work of nature is not easily found. Mountain, hill, plain, valley, and a winding river are features which commend this vicinity to the lover of the picturesque. The scenery is most beautiful; the waters pure. A charming locality for the invalid or pleasure seeker.
