View of Wyandotte, Wayne County, M.I., 1896 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler. This bird’s-eye view print of Wyandotte, Michigan was drawn and published by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler, Fowler & Moyer Co. in 1896. Wyandotte was settled south of Detroit in the 1830's.
The village, along the Detroit River, remained a lumber, ship-building and agricultural center until the 1860's, when several iron ore smelters were built there. A great deal of ore, mined in the Marquette Range of upper Michigan, was transported here for processing.
The township was laid out by John S. Van Alstyne, general manager of the local Eureka Iron & Steel Works, using the “Philadelphia Plan”, with streets paralleling the river numbered and east and west streets named after plants and trees of the region. Van Alstyne became the town’s first mayor.
The Eureka Company shut down in the early 1890's and Wyandotte turned toward the production of chemicals. Captain John Baptiste Ford started the Michigan Alkali Company at Wyandotte in 1893. The firm produced baking soda, soda ash and other products using locally mined salt.
The illustration shows labeled streets, buildings, waterways and railroad routes. Inset illustrations feature the Michigan Alkali Works Nos. 1 and 2, built by J. B. Ford. Shipping and boat-building activities are displayed along the river, including the steamer “City of Cleveland”.
