Map of the Old Colony Railroad with its branches and connecting roads, prepared under the direction of the Committee of Investigation, January 1850, S. Dwight Eaton, Engr. The Old Colony Railroad was a popular standard-gauge railway running throughout the greater Boston area from the mid-1840's until the mid-1890's. The Old Colony name referred to the original Plymouth Colony that had been established there back in 1620. The railroad operated several steamboat lines to connect its network, and erected the lovely Samoset Hotel in the town of Plymouth to accommodate travelers. After leasing the South Shore Railroad in 1849, the Old Colony was able to extend its length and increase its popularity enough to warrant an additional track from Boston to South Braintree. By the time the Old Colony Railroad was leased to the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad in 1893 it had acquired or built nearly 617 miles of track.
This map of eastern Massachusetts published in 1850, covers the area from Boston to Wood’s Hole and west to Providence, Rhode Island. It shows cities and towns of Bristol, Norfolk, Plymouth, and Barnstable counties. Railroads are labeled with mileage indicated between stations.
