Railroad Map of Ohio published by the State, 1890. Iron production in northeastern Ohio was of great economic concern in the late 1800's. Charcoal furnaces that had produced pig-iron since early in the century were being replaced by coal burning furnaces which could produce cleaner and higher quality iron.
Several important businesses emerged in Ohio including the Standard Oil Company. John D. Rockefeller’s 1863 investment in a Cleveland oil refinery proved to be successful enough for him to eventually gain control of nearly ninety percent of all oil refineries and pipelines in the United States, using what critics called “unethical practices”.
This map was prepared by J.A. Norton, commissioner of railroads and telegraphs, in 1890. It shows cities, towns, waterways, and single and double track railroads with mileage noted between stations.
