In 1855 the first toll-bridge over the Mississippi River opened at Minneapolis.

The Western North Carolina Railroad Company was approved by the General Assembly to build and operate a line between Salisbury and a proposed station four miles east of Morganton.

In Central America the Panama Railway began operations between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, running parallel to the Panama Canal.

This map was published in 1855 by Traugott Bromme. It displays place names in English. Title in German: Post, Kanal und Eisenbahnkarte der Verbeinigten Staaten von Nord-Amerika. Inset maps of St. Louis, New York City, Baltimore and Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, and the Western States are included.
