Description

Bird's eye view of San Francisco.

The city of San Francisco was incorporated in 1850, and later grew to become one of the most famous cities in the US. The California Gold Rush in 1848 saw the city's population increase from 1,000 to 25,000 over the course of a year. In 1869 the Pacific Railroad reached San Francisco inspiring the development of the Port of San Francisco. This led the Bay Area to become a notable world trade center.

This perspective map was drawn in 1868 by George H. Goddard and published by Snow & May. It shows streets and buildings, with shipping activities throughout the waterways.
