System of Railways. Coal was discovered in Kentucky in the mid-1700's, but wasn't mined commercially until 1820 when operations opened in Muhlenberg County. The designated mine was known as Kentucky's Western Coalfield. The mine was a major fuel source for the state, producing one million tons of coal by 1880. The coal fields of Kentucky and Tennessee are shaded in this map. Mining began in early 1900 at the Eastern Coalfield in Floyd County. The famed Hatfield-McCoy feud loomed over Pike County, Kentucky and Mingo County, West Virginia from 1860 until 1891. Some say the feud never ended. |
