Reproduction panorama map of Albany, New York drawn and published by H. H. Rowley & Co. in 1879. Albany, on the west bank of the Hudson River, is the county seat for Albany County. In 1794, Simeon De Witt developed a block grid system here giving streets bird and mammal names, names that are still in place today. Transportation propelled the community in the 1820's with the completion of the Erie Canal and some of the country's earliest railroad systems. The map captures Albany in 1879 when local brewer Michael Nolan of the Beverwyck Brewery was town mayor.
