Description

View of Amherst, Hampshire County, M.A., 1886 / drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh.

This bird’s-eye view print of Amherst, Massachusetts was drawn by Lucien R. Burleigh and published by Burleigh Lith. Est. in 1886. The map of Amherst was drawn in the year of Emily Dickinson’s death. She was born in Amherst in 1830 and studied at the town’s academy in her youth. Although few of her poems were published in her lifetime, Dickinson left a vast body of work to be discovered later, and Amherst has never forgotten her.

Amherst is located in the Connecticut River Valley and has always been known for its fine learning institutions. The first Massachusetts Agricultural College building was completed in 1867 and began that fall with a student body of fifty. The school in the instruction of agricultural, mechanical and military arts expanded in the 1880's, adding a long gymnasium, a chapel and an experiment station.

The illustration includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route.
