View of Fort Madison, Lee County, I.A., 1889 / drawn & published by H. Wellge.
This perspective print of Fort Madison, Iowa was drawn by Henry Wellge and published by American Publishing Co. in 1889. A former army post along the Mississippi River, Fort Madison became the site of Iowa’s state penitentiary in 1839.
The dual-purpose bridge shown was constructed in 1887. The bridge accommodated both wagon and railroad traffic crossing the Mississippi into rural Illinois at this point for forty years until being replaced.
