Historic Map - Hannibal, MO - 1869
Description
Bird's eye view of Washington, Franklin County, Missouri 1869. Drawn by A. Ruger.
Reproduction map of the city known as Hannibal, MO, drawn by Albert Ruger. Produced the same year that the transcontinental railroad was completed joining the two halves of the United States. Until that time Hannibal was considered a western-most outpost. Located along the Mississippi River this town grew through it's regional marketing of livestock and grain, and when the railroad opened up the west, became pivotal in the transportation of goods. The city is best known as the boyhood home of author Mark Twain and was the inspiration for many of his stories.
The map features clearly labeled street names with lively scenes of riverboat, railroad, carriage and pedestrian traffic.
