Description

Martin's Ferry, Ohio 1899 / drawn by T. M. Fowler.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Martin's Ferry, Ohio drawn and published by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler in 1899. Martin's Ferry located along the Ohio River is Ohio's oldest permanent settlement. The town was named after one of the earliest settling families, the Martins. The city is still laid out as it was in 1835 by Ebenezer Martin, though the apostrophe in the name Martin's Ferry has been dropped. Martin's Ferry had been home to Betty Zane, who was a Revolutionary War heroine when she hid gunpowder in her dress and was responsible for saving Fort Henry in one of the war's last battles. Martin's Ferry developed into an important shipping port and railroad center during the 1800's. The map has been edited to remove extensive water stains.
