Port Henry, N.Y. Drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh. This reproduction bird's-eye view of Port Henry, New York was published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1889. Port Henry is located on the west shore of Lake Champlain at the north end of Bulwagga Bay. A popular Native American hunting and fishing ground in early times, timber harvesting and land clearing became prominent after the first saw mill was built in 1765. By the mid-1800s, there were twenty mills. The lumber was rafted north to Canada, and when the Champlain Canal was opened the lumber was floated southward on the new waterway. A mile and a half north of Port Henry large iron beds were discovered and workers began piling the iron on sleds and dragging them into town. The Witherbee, Sherman & Company and other firms began seriously mining the ore around 1853. At the time of this map's publishing Port Henry was busy harvesting smelt and was well known for its winter ice fishing.
This panoramic view map of Port Henry from 1889 shows labeled streets, buildings and railroad line.
