Historic Map - Wauwatosa, WI - 1892
Description
This beautifully colored bird's eye view map of Wauwatosa and the Western Suburbs of Milwaukee was published by Marr & Richards Engraving Co. in 1892. It advertises Warner Bros. & Wambold, sole agents for the following plats: Spring Hill, Wauwatosa Park, College Land Co., Inglewood, Oak Grove and Warner's Subdivision No. 1. Wauwatosa is a city in Milwaukee County along the banks of the Menomonee River. In the 1800's the community maintained vast farms throughout the area. Wauwatosa was home to Rev. Enoch Underwood, who served almost forty years, starting in 1843, as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Wauwatosa. Underwood was a strict abolitionist who denied church membership to slavery supporters, helped fund the newspaper "The American Freeman", and harbored fugitive slaves on their way to freedom in Canada.
