State of Kansas compiled from the official records of the General Land Office and other sources, under supervision of G.P. Strum, principal draughtsman. In the late 1860's a railroad line between St. Joseph and Topeka began building westward, and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad was organized. The railroad held important car and locomotive shops at Topeka.
At this time, many new settlers arrived by either steamboat or rail. Topeka was emerging as an agricultural center with interests in education and the business of the region. The cattle industry lasted until the late 1870's and Kansas prospered greatly because of it.
This detailed map of Kansas, drawn in 1884, shows land offices, townships subdivided, drainage, county seats, cities, towns, railroad limits, railroads completed, military reservations, county boundaries and Indian reservations.
Annotated copy showing known and proposed railroad lines are noted in blue and red ink and pencil.
