Description

Map of the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad and connecting lines.

The Ohio & Pennsylvania Railroad was chartered in 1848. It consolidated to form the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railroad.

In 1849 the Pennsylvania Railroad made an operating contract with the Harrisburg, Portsmouth, Mountjoy & Lancaster Railroad to extend a line between Philadelphia and Pittsburg.

By the early 1900's the popular new line, affectionately known as the “Pennsy”, became the largest railroad in the United States according to revenue and ridership. By the 1920's the railroad operated over 10,000 miles of track and carried almost three times the traffic as other US railroads.

In 1850 the Pennsylvania Railroad became the first railroad to own and operate its own anthracite coal mine in northeastern Pennsylvania.

This outline map of the north-central and northeastern United States was published in 1850 by Solomon W. Roberts. It displays the relief in Ohio by hachures, place names, canals, and the railroad network of 1850.
