The Connecticut Western Railroad was completed in the year of this map's publishing. The standard-gauge railway ran from Hartford westward to the New York state line, where it connected with the Dutchess & Columbia Railroad at Millerton. The company went bankrupt in 1880 and reformed as the Hartford & Connecticut Western Railroad. Later it became part of the Central New England Railway.
