Description

View of Monhegan, Maine, 1896, drawn and published by A. F. Poole.

A lovely view of Monhegan Island, about 12 miles off the Maine coast. The island was visited by European explorers and was home to a British fishing camp before the Plymouth Colony was established. Samoset, the first Native American to make contact with the pilgrims of Plymouth Colony, learned English from the fishermen and fur traders of Monhegan. Samoset, of the Wompanoag tribe, walked into the pilgrims camp on March 16, 1622 and said “Welcome, Englishmen”, to the astonishment of the British colonists. Two days later, he returned with Squanto, who spoke even better English.

This view depicts Monhegan Island as it appeared in 1896. A thriving art colony was already established here with artists from the New York School of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts spending summers here. The colony continues to offer support to artists who wish to visit and work there through the Monhegan Artists’ Residency Corporation.
