Panoramic map of Hardwick, VT, Caledonia County, published by Geo. E. Norris in 1892.

Although The town received its charter in 1781, granted to Danforth Keyes and 66 associates, permanent settlement did not begin until 1793.  Several sawmills and gristmills were built along the Lamoille River.

The Portland & Ogdensburg Railway opened following the Civil War, facilitating the shipment of quarried stone.  Several granite quarries and polishing mills are referenced on the map.
