Historic Railroad Map of the Northeastern United States - 1852

Map of the United States in part and Canada showing all the canals, railroads, navigable rivers, etc.

This map of the north-central and northeastern United States and southeastern Canada was published in 1852 by John Disturnell. It shows place names, state and provincial boundaries, canals, stage roads, steamboat routes and railroads, both completed and in progress.

In 1852 the Toronto Stock Exchange opened. Franklin Pierce was elected president of the United States in that same year. Also in 1852, Loyola College was chartered in Baltimore, while Antioch College was founded in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Antioch, designed as a coeducational facility, was built on grounds that had been earlier used by a short-lived socialist collective community. The new college focused on languages, history, mathematics, philosophy and science. Its first president was politician Horace Mann. Mann, who had been earlier elected to the United States House of Representatives, had also served as Secretary of the Massachusetts State Board of Education, and was known as the originator of the Common School movement throughout the United States and Canada. In those early days tuition at Antioch ran $24. per year. Antioch’s first graduating class included just 28 students.
