Description

View of Bangor, Northampton County, P.A., 1918 / drawn & published by Hughes & Bailey.

The reproduction aero-view map of Bangor, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by Hughes & Bailey in 1918. Bangor was established along Martin’s Creek in the Lehigh Valley in the 1800's with the discovery of slate deposits by R. M. Jones, Esq. of Bangor, North Wales. Jones, a geologist and slate quarry expert, followed an impressive looking slate stratum from the Delaware River to this site and found the conditions for gathering of the slate excellent and the source inexhaustible. The normally quiet farming area was transformed into a slate quarry region quickly. Jones, along with several others, began quarrying throughout the valley and the borough of Bangor was formed to serve and supply the needs of the industry. Much of the town was built using the slate. The slate produced here was considered to be equal, if not superior, to any other slate in the country. Tens of thousands of roofing squares per year were produced during Bangor’s high production years; most of which were transported to England.

The map from 1918 includes clearly labeled streets, buildings, mines and quarries in the distance and railroad lines. It features inset illustrations of the following:
