View of Forest City, Susquehanna County, P.A., 1889 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer. A. E. Downs, lith. This panoramic print of Forest City, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1889. Forest City was settled in the 1860's as a lumbering community. The nearby Lackawanna River and later the Jefferson branch railroad of the D. & H. Canal Company transported timber from Forest City to mills far and near.
In 1871, coal was discovered and the Forest City Shaft No. 1 on Railroad Street was created. 1886 saw another coal discovery at the south end of town and Shaft No. 2 was put into action. The coal mining industry and timber harvesting enabled the borough to prosper and grow during the late 1800's and Forest City was incorporated in 1888.
The map from 1889 includes Forest City’s streets, buildings and railroad routes.
