This aero-view print of Frackville, Pennsylvania was drawn and published by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler in 1889. The borough of Frackville was settled in 1861 with the discovery of anthracite coal at the foot of nearby Broad Mountain. By 1862 a mine was in full operation here. Frackville prospered with the railroad transportation of coal from most regions of the Pennsylvania coal fields until the 1930's. In 1889, Frackville’s mine was a booming asset, producing 50,000 tons of coal per day.
